Washington College is a private, independent liberal arts college located in Chestertown, which is a town in the US state of Maryland, serving as the county seat of Kent County, with a population of nearly 4800 inhabitants, estimated during the 2000 census.
The college was established in 1782, when Maryland granted its charter, and became co-ed in 1891. Its founding was supported by George Washington, through generous financial support, and through service on the college's Board of Visitors and Governors, and therefore, the institution was named in its honor.
Washington College is the 10th oldest college in the US and was the first college chartered after American independence. It currently offers its students over 40 majors and academic programs to choose from, being `highly regarded for great teaching and a small student-professor ratio that fosters a close atmosphere for learning`.
Washington College's athletic teams are known as The Shoremen and The Shorewomen, and they compete in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are maroon and black.
Since it first opened its doors to students, Washington College has produced numerous notable alumni, among the most noteworthy ones also being: Alonzo G. Decker - co-founder of the tool and hardware company, Black and Decker, Laura San Giacomo - actress, Benjamin H. Vandervoort - one of the few soldiers to be awarded three Distinguished Service Crosses for Bravery in combat, in addition to three Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star with Valor; renowned for his heroics during the Normandy Invasion, and George Washington - who accepted an honorary degree in 1789 and became a leading alumnus.
